Get higher-strength mortar for demanding masonry. STUBBE'S Type S Masonry Cement is a pre-blended type s masonry cement designed to be mixed with sand and water to produce Type S mortar for interior or exterior, above- or below-grade masonry, including load-bearing walls, chimneys, and parapets. Meets CSA A3002. Packaged in a 73.4 lb (33.3 kg) bag.

High-Strength Masonry Cement for Structural and Below-Grade Work

STUBBE'S Type S Masonry Cement is a factory-blended type s masonry cement that produces Type S mortar when combined with masonry sand and clean water. It meets CSA A3002 for masonry cement, with mortar proportioning per CSA A179. Each 73.4 lb (33.3 kg) bag yields enough mortar to lay approximately 135 bricks or 35–40 standard concrete blocks (varies by joint size and technique).

Use Type S Masonry Cement for masonry applications requiring high compressive strength — interior or exterior, above or below grade. Type S mortar is commonly specified for load-bearing walls, below-grade construction, parapet walls, and masonry subject to high saturation levels including chimneys and freestanding boundary walls. It is the standard choice where structural performance and moisture resistance are primary requirements.

Note: Type S mortar should not be used where Type N mortar is specified. Type N and Type S have different strength and flexibility characteristics — always follow the project specification and local building code for mortar type selection. For general-purpose, above-grade masonry where high strength is not required, see STUBBE'S Type N Masonry Cement.

The cement is a factory-proportioned blend of Portland cement, plasticizers, and an air-entraining agent. The higher cement content compared to Type N delivers the increased compressive strength required for structural and below-grade applications. The air-entraining agent supports freeze-thaw durability in exposed joints.

Preparation, Mixing & Application

Combine 1 part STUBBE'S Type S Masonry Cement with 2 1/4–3 parts masonry sand (by volume). Add clean, potable water gradually and mix to a smooth, workable consistency. Use the mortar within about 90 minutes of mixing (shorter in hot or windy conditions). Do not retemper with extra water once the mortar begins to stiffen. Lay units using accepted masonry practice with full bedding and proper joint thickness. Tool joints at consistent timing for uniform appearance. Protect fresh masonry from rain, freezing, and rapid drying. Maintain temperatures above 40 °F (+5 °C) and protect from freezing for at least 48 hours.

Features

  • Higher compressive strength: Designed for structural and load-bearing masonry applications where Type S mortar is specified.
  • Above or below grade versatility: Suitable for interior or exterior masonry work including foundations and below-grade walls.
  • Performs in high-saturation conditions: Commonly used for parapets, chimneys, and freestanding walls exposed to weather and moisture.
  • Workable handling with proper sand: Factory-blended plasticizers deliver a jobsite-friendly consistency when mixed with quality masonry sand.
