The practical guide

Before the first snowfall: your snowblower preparation checklist

A short inspection before winter gives you time to find the manual, replace worn parts and arrange service before the machine is needed.

Start with your model and serial number. Maintenance schedules, fluids, wear limits and starting procedures vary—even between snow blowers from the same brand. Use this checklist to organise the work, then follow the manual for your exact machine.

1. Find the right manual

Photograph the model and serial-number label and use both when looking up instructions or ordering parts. Find the sections for maintenance, storage and pre-operation checks. An online manual for a similar-looking machine may describe a different engine or clearing mechanism.

If the machine was put away with a known fault, address that first. A missing guard, damaged control or abnormal noise needs attention before a test run.

2. Inspect the machine while it is stopped

Follow the manual's shutdown and power-isolation procedure before inspection: this may include removing the key and battery, or disconnecting the spark-plug lead. Wait for moving parts to stop.

  • Look for loose or damaged parts, guards and cables.
  • Check the clearing components against their specified wear limits.
  • Check tyres, skids and scraper settings where fitted.
  • Make sure the chute and controls are unobstructed.

Do not assume every machine uses the same paddles, belts or shear fasteners. Never use your hands to clear a chute; use the method and clearing tool specified by the manufacturer.

3. Prepare its power source

Gas: check fuel condition, oil requirements and scheduled engine maintenance against the manual. Do not guess the oil grade, quantity or whether fuel should be mixed. Refuel outdoors with the engine stopped and cooled, and deal with leaks before use.

Battery: inspect packs and the charger for damage and use only approved combinations. Charge and store them within their specified conditions. Do not charge a damaged battery. Leave time for charging before snow arrives.

4. Walk the clearing route

Remove loose objects and identify edging, steps and uneven surfaces while you can still see them. Plan where the snow can go without aiming it at people, traffic or property. Make room to get the machine out of storage without an awkward lift.

Review the controls and shutdown procedure. If the manual calls for an operational check, perform it in a clear outdoor area with people and pets kept away. Never run a gas engine inside a garage, even with the door open.

5. Arrange help before the first storm

If you find damage or are unsure about a maintenance task, contact a qualified service provider with the model, serial number and symptoms. Interline's service page lists snowblower maintenance and repair. Use the contact page to confirm where to bring your machine and current service arrangements.
