The practical guide

Milwaukee M12 vs M18: choose around the work

Compare the specific tools, batteries and working space. Voltage alone does not tell you which kit will be more useful.

Milwaukee M18 FUEL kit

M12 and M18 are Milwaukee’s 12V and 18V battery platforms. Batteries do not interchange between them. Choose the tools that meet your tasks, then consider the size, weight and future tools you want in the same system.

Choose a tool before choosing a platform

Start with the jobs you do repeatedly: the materials, hole sizes, fasteners and access. Check the specifications for the actual model. M12 is not simply a home-use range, and an M18 badge does not mean every M18 tool outperforms every M12 tool at every task.

For work inside cabinets or above shoulder height, compare reach and weight with the intended battery attached. For demanding repeated work, compare the tool's capacity and recommended battery combination. A large pack can change the handling of an otherwise compact tool.

Keep battery and charger compatibility separate

Item What to check
M12 battery For compatible M12 tools, not M18 tools.
M18 battery For compatible M18 tools, not M12 tools.
Charger Some models charge both systems; others do not. Read its model-specific compatibility.
FUEL A designation used on tools in both platforms, not a third interchangeable battery family.

A dual-platform charger does not make the packs interchangeable. Also avoid comparing amp-hour numbers alone across different voltages as though they mean identical stored energy or runtime.

Compare two complete kits

Interline's 3497-22 M12 FUEL kit includes the 3404-20 hammer drill/driver, 3453-20 impact driver, 2.0Ah and 4.0Ah M12 batteries, and an M12 charger. The 3697-22 M18 FUEL kit includes the 2904-20 hammer drill/driver, 2953-20 impact driver, two 5.0Ah M18 batteries, and an M18/M12 charger.

Those are different packages, not just different voltages. Compare the tools, battery options and contents against what you already own. Check the current listing before ordering.

Think one or two tools ahead

List the other tools you realistically plan to buy, then check which platform offers the models you need. Reusing compatible batteries and a charger can simplify the kit, but it is not worth choosing an unsuitable tool just to stay with one battery.

There is also no need to replace working equipment just because you add a second system. Mark and store the packs clearly, use approved chargers, and choose the tool that suits each job.

If your immediate choice is between drilling and fastening tools, read drill vs hammer drill vs impact driver first. Then compare the shortlisted models in the Milwaukee collection.
